Evangelos Asprogerakas

Evangelos Asprogerakas is an Associate Professor of Spatial Planning at the Department of Planning and Regional Development of the University of Thessaly. He holds a PhD in Urban Planning and Spatial Planning at the school of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens. He also owns a degree in Agronomy and Landscape Engineering as well as a Master of Sciences degree in Development and Planning from the University College of London. He has taught at the National Technical University of Athens on a postgraduate level, as a Professor-Counsellor at the Hellenic Open University, as well as at the National School of Public Administration and Local Government. He has also worked as a freelancer and in the sector of Public Administration as a special scientist at the Ministry of Environment and Energy and at the Ministry of Interior. He has produced extensive research work and his scientific interest focuses on the topics of strategic spatial planning, sea spatial planning, spatial governance and comprehensive approaches on urban development. He has engaged in scientific and professional activity in many countries, such as Greece, Germany, the UK, Cyprus and Saudi Arabia.

Anestis Gourgiotis

Anestis Gourgiotis is an Associate Professor of Spatial Planning at the Department of Planning and Regional Development of the University of Thessaly. He has studied Spatial Planning in Bordeux, France and has had his Master’s Degree in Urban Planning, being conceded the title “DESS Urbanisme Opérationnel”. Anestis Gourgiotis has conducted his PhD research at the Department of Planning and Regional Development of the University of Thessaly. He has served in various positions at the Ministry of Environment and Energy, among them as a special scientist of spatial planning at the Directorate General of Land Planning, head of a number of departments inside the Ministry and as head of the same Directorate General. He has served as a National Representative of the Ministry of Environment and Energy – Permanent Greek Representation in the EU and as member of the Committee of Senior Spatial Planning Officers of the European Committee of Ministers for the Development of the Territory (Comité Européen des Ministres d’ Aménagement du Territoire). He has also served at the Council of Europe as well as the working groups of OECD. During his tenancy at the Ministry of Environment and Energy he was responsible for the supervising and monitoring of Special Spatial Frameworks and Regional Spatial Frameworks as well as an advisor on issues of infrastructure location choice and investment in renewable energy sources.

Dimitris Economou is an Emeritus Professor at the Department of Planning and Regional Development of the University of Thessaly. Dimitris Economou has studies in urban planning and geography from NTUA (School of Architecture) and the Center for Urban Research of Paris, with a PhD in Spatial Planning from the 1st University of Paris (Sorbonne).

He taught and continues to teach urban and spatial planning in the undergraduate and postgraduate study program of the Department of Regional Planning and Regional Developmeny from 1989 until today.
He has taught or been a researcher at Greek and foreign Universities and research centers, such as NTUA, University of Athens, Center de Recherche d’Urbanisme and EKKE.
He has edited or written alone or with others 7 books and has published over 100 papers in scientific journals, conference proceedings and collective volumes in Greek, English and French. His research work is diverse and covers many topics of spatial analysis, development and planning.

Panayotis Pantazis

Panayotis Pantazis is a member of the Laboratory Teaching Staff (EDIP) at the Department of Planning and Regional Development of the University of Thessaly. He is a graduate of the same department and a holder of a Master’s degree in Urban and Spatial Planning, as well as a PhD candidate at the Department of Economic and Regional Development of Panteion University. Scientifically, he focuses on methods of representation of geographical information systems, quantitative spatial analyses that emphasize on spatial statistics and econometrics and the standardisation of statistical and geo-spatial data for spatial planning. He has been registered as a trainer in the National Center for Public Administration and Local Government in the sectors of Geographical Information Systems and Spatial Planning. He has also served as a member of scientific working groups, participating in a number of research programs on spatial planning, as a technical advisor for the publishing of the Cartographic Atlas and various research books and surveys, while he also owns publications in scientific books and presentations at scientific conferences.

Anna Samarina

Anna Samarina is a member of the Laboratory Teaching Staff (EDIP) at the Department of Planning and Regional Development of the University of Thessaly. She is a graduate of the Department of Planning and Regional Development of the University of Thessaly and a Master’s Degree holder in Urban and Spatial Planning of the same department while she is also a PhD candidate at the University of Thessaly. Scientifically, she is mainly interested in Spatial Planning, Urban Revival and Climate Change as well as the Conservation of the Environment. She has participated in a considerable number of research programs focusing on issues of a comprehensive urban intervention and spatial planning.

Constantinos Cartalis is a Professor and Director of the Department of Environmental Physics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He is also a Collaborating Professor at the Hellenic Open University in the field of “Environmental Design” as well as of the EMME-CARE program regarding Climate Change in the Eastern Mediterranean. He is an honorary doctor of the Democritus University of Thrace and has been honored with the Medal of the City of Athens. He is a member of the Bureau of the Subsidiary Body of UNFCCC for the implementation of the Climate Convention, the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, member of the Experts’ Committee of the European Commission on Climate Change and Cultural Heritage and member of the Assembly of the European Commission on “Climate Neutral and Smart Cities.

Dr. Constantinos Philippopoulos


Constantinos Filippopoulos holds a Ph.D in Environmental Physics. He recently completed his postdoctoral research in the field of Energy and Meteorology (University of Reading) on ​​the recognition of the effect of atmospheric circulation on wind energy production in the United Kingdom using artificial neural networks. His research activity is in the field of application of machine learning models in the environmental sciences for the extraction of information in the fields of climatology, renewable energy sources and air pollution.

Thalia Mavrakou

Thalia Mavrakou is a researcher in the team of the Remote Sensing laboratory of the Physics department of NKUA. She is a PhD candidate in the field of urban energy balance and thermal comfort. Her main research interests are satellite remote sensing of the urban environment, urban climatology and meteorology. She has participated as a researcher (2015-2016) in the MASS Comenius program that concerns the motivation of students in science and has contributed to the development of educational modules for a postgraduate program of the Department of Geology. She recently completed a research project on the assessment of land use change / cover for Lake Stymfalia, which is a NATURA 2000 site, using remote sensing data. She also participates as an instructor in the Supplementary Distance Education Programme (E-Learning) of the Center of Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning of NKUA regarding the use of geographical information systems for the management, protection and monitoring of the urban and natural environment.

Anastasios Polydoros is a researcher in the Remote Sensing Laboratory of the Physics Department of NKUA. His main research interests include satellite remote sensing, environmental management and urban monitoring. he has participated in the DRAGON 3 program of the European Space Agency, which concerned the construction of indicators for monitoring the urban environment, in a research project on climate change and the development model of Greece, while also participating as an instructor in theSupplementary Distance Education Programme (E-Learning) of the Center of Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning of NKUA on the use of geographic information systems for the management, protection and monitoring of the natural environment.
